Pixies, Koala Voice
Pixies, one of the most influential alternative rock bands of all time, are taking their signature aural mix of psychedelia, dissonance, hard-hitting guitars and lyrical melodies, which so fatefully influenced fateful bands such as Nirvana, Radiohead, Blur and numerous others, on an extensive global tour, which will also bring them to Slovenia. The cult band, a favourite of both the older and the youngest generations, will return to Križanke in Ljubljana this summer, the same venue the group had already packed full in both 2004 and as far back as 1989. Warming up will be lively Slovenian band Koala Voice, regulars of both Eastern European clubs and Western European showcases ever since their victory in the first season of the Špil liga high school band league, and one of the most promising young Slovenian groups.
This time around, Pixies – featuring Joey Santiago (guitar), Black Francis (guitar & vocals), David Lovering (drums) and Paz Lenchantin (bass) – are again promising an energetic, unforgettable concert. Fans can expect a setlist comprised of the classics and catalogue rarities, as well as newer songs from Indie Cindy and the band’s latest release, Head Carrier. The precise selection remains a mystery even to the band members themselves – the skilled musicians come prepared with nearly 90 songs rehearsed and up their sleeve, with the decision which to play always left until the final moments right before each show. Those who already caught the band as one of the highlights of 2014’s INmusic Festival in Zagreb can therefore expect yet another memorable performance.
Quite some time has passed since the young Koala Voice celebrated victory in the first season of our Špil liga high-school league in 2014, but one of the most promising Slovenian bands today certainly hasn’t been resting on its laurels. Their catchy blend of rock, pop, disco and punk, an excellent debut album and a lively stage performance that is sure to make you move have taken the Koalas around Europe, from Eastern European clubs to Western European showcases such as Reeperbahn, Waves Vienna and Wild Mint – DIY Mag even declared them one of the five biggest discoveries of Eurosonic Noorderslag!
Ahead of the upcoming release of their second album, produced by Danton Supple, who has worked with Coldplay, Morrissey and Patti Smith, a new challenge awaits – the packed Križanke auditorium and warming up for the Pixies, right after returning from Pohoda Festival in Slovakia. We don’t doubt they’re more than up to the task.
