Po zvočnem udaru My Bloody Valentine bomo v Kinu Šiška gostili še drugo legendo shoegazea! Zasedba The Jesus and Mary Chain je s svojimi zidovi kitarskega hrupa in sanjavimi pop strukturami v osemdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja zasejala semena tega žanra in spremenila alternativni rock za vse čase. Po mnenju NME je svojčas veljala celo za najboljši bend na svetu – poleg vseh drugih priznanj njen prvenec Psychocandy še danes spada med 1001 albumov, ki jih morate slišati pred smrtjo. Po razpadu in ponovni združitvi se še vedno izvrstna škotska naveza k nam vrača s prvo ploščo po 19 letih, letošnjo Damage and Joy. Za ogrevanje bodo poskrbeli domači shoegaze junaki Haiku Garden.
Preden sta se vzkipljiva brata William in Jim Reid, ustvarjalno jedro The Jesus and Mary Chain, kar med nastopom konec devetdesetih divje sprla in za več let odkorakala z odrov, sta s spreminjajočim se naborom sočlanov izdala pol ducata albumov. Med njimi je tudi prelomni Psychocandy leta 1985, na katerem se je še kot bobnar kalil poznejši vodja benda Primal Scream, Bobby Gillespie.
Na omenjenem prvencu je skupina sladkobne pop planjave tistega časa ogradila s temačno trdnjavo kitarskega feedbacka, mimogrede postavila enega od temeljnih kamnov shoegazea in glasbeno zgodovino obogatila za enega njenih najboljših in najvplivnejših albumov.
Po razhodu sta brata potrebovala osem let, da sta spet nastopila skupaj, in še dodatno desetletje, da sta z osveženo postavo izdala prvo novo ploščo, Damage and Joy. Produkcijo sta zaupala ustanovnemu članu in nekdanjemu basistu kultne skupine Killing Joke, Youthu, v 14 novih komadih pa se poklonila zapuščini zamegljenega, nastrobiranega vzdušja “njunih” osemdesetih, a hkrati tudi uspešno tvegala s posodobljenim zvokom. Oziroma, kot je jedrnato zapisal The Guardian, “album vsebuje stare in nove skladbe ter trenutke čiste blaženosti”.
Tisti, ki ste skupino ujeli leta 1989 v Hali Tivoli, veste, o čem je govora, tisti, ki ste jo zgrešili, pa se lahko veselite edinstvene priložnosti v živo izkusiti bend, katerega zvočna zapuščina še vedno vpliva na zvok mlajših izvajalcev, kot so A Place To Bury Strangers, Wavves, The Horrors in mnogi drugi.
Štiričlanska zasedba Haiku Garden iz Ljubljane je pred dobrima dvema letoma domačo sceno osvežila z zidovi lebdečega kitarskega ruženja, spevnimi melodijami in prelepimi atmosferami. Nase je sprva opozorila kot predskupina hrupnih večernikov Mile Me Deaf, koncertno izpopolnjevanje pa je nadaljevala na Klubskem maratonu Radia Študent, Trnjefestu, INmusicMENTu, festivalu Velvet in drugod. Po navdušujočem nastopu na letošnjem MENTu se je skupina odpravila na uspešno turnejo po Vzhodni Evropi, po vrnitvi pa se je izvrstno odrezala tudi kot predskupina newyorške zasedbe LVL UP v Gromki in na Šiškinem malem odru pred SUUNS. O tem, da se dobra glasba skupine sliši daleč, pa priča tudi dejstvo, da je singel ‘Rosetta’ kot komad dneva na seattleškem radiu KEXP predvajal tudi Kevin Cole, obraz te kultne glasbene institucije.

After the sonic strike of My Bloody Valentine, Kino Šiška will host another legendary shoegaze band! With its walls of guitar fuzz and dreamy pop structures, the Jesus and Mary Chain planted the seeds of shoegaze in the 1980s, changing alternative rock forever. In their heyday, NME declared them the best band in the world, while in addition to all the other accolades, their debut Psychocandy is still one of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die. After parting ways and then reuniting, the still amazing Scottish group is returning to Slovenia with its first record in 19 years, 2017’s Damage and Joy.
Before the volatile brothers William and Jim Reid, the creative core of the Jesus and Mary Chain, had a wild falling out towards the end of the 1990s and walked offstage for many years, they and their revolving line-up of band members released half a dozen albums, including the ground-breaking Psychocandy in 1985, which also featured later Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie on the drums.
On its above-mentioned debut, the group built a dark fortress of guitar feedback around the sugary popscapes of the time, incidentally establishing one of the foundations of shoegaze and enriching the history of music with one of the best and most influential albums ever.
After separating, eight years passed before the brothers performed together again, and then it took another decade for them to release their first new album with a fresh band, Damage and Joy. Production was entrusted to a founding member and former bassist of Killing Joke, Youth, with the 14 new songs representing a tribute to the legacy of the hazy, strobed-up ambiance of “the Jesus and Mary Chain’s” 1980s, while still successfully venturing into more contemporary sonic territory. Or, in the concise words of the Guardian, “the album contains old and new songs and moments of pure bliss”.
Those of you who have managed to catch the group live before know what we mean, while those of you who haven’t can now look forward to an exceptional opportunity to experience a band whose sonic heritage still influences the sound of younger acts, such as A Place To Bury Strangers, Wavves, The Horrors and many others, live.
